Sam woke up this morning with a beautiful surprise in his "in-box;" a lovely picture of Teah with Wilma wishing him a happy Father's Day. To all you other father's out there, we hope you have a wonderful day and get the opportunity to enjoy the time with your family. Steve and Don, thanks for all you have done for us along the way.
While consuming a nice breakfast at our hotel, the cook of our meal came over to our table, picked Henry up and said she wanted to go show our baby off. So with out us even giving much of a consent she walked out of the restaurant and took our child for a walk down the paseo in front of the hotel. While it was quite entertaining, it was also a little nerve wrecking. Fortunately they came back a short time later and as always, Henry was full of big smiles.
After our buffet, we strolled over to the National Gallery where they are hosting "Munch 150," an exhibit celebrating Edvard Munch's 150th birthday. For those of you not familiar with Edvard Munch, he is most famous for his painting "The Scream." The exhibit was really quite impressive and we were most intrigued at how Munch was an artist who was never professionally taught and his talents ranged immensely across a wide range of artistic styles. Specific to "The Scream," (which Sam was super excited to see as he is a big fan of the piece), we learned that the painting was done primarily in crayons and the medium was a piece of cardboard.
We toured the museum for a little over an hour and then walked over to Oslo's City Hall. As Jennifer learned in our travel book, many areas of Europe are known for their elaborate cathedrals, but in Scandinavia, religion has never been much of a focal point and their emphasis has been placed on civic structures. Although the City Hall was far less impressive as the other sites in town, Henry had a fantastic time crawling through the basement where there was a huge area that he could move around free of any obstructions.
From the City Hall we ventured over to Akershus Fortress Complex. The Castle within the compound is from around 1300 and is one of Oslo's oldest structures. The military facility is still being occupied as a military base today but also serves as a park like complex for local residents and tourists.
After checking out the fortress we grabbed our luggage and headed to the port to load our ship headed for Copenhagen. The cruise will be an overnight journey and by 9:30 am tomorrow we will be in Copenhagen, Denmark.
